Issues with the lower extremities can have severe effects on the quality of our lives.  If you’re looking for a clinic that offers help including shockwave therapy for heel pain treatment in Singapore, you have come to the right place.  Heel pain may not only be caused by plantar fasciitis or heel spur syndrome; there are many conditions which may affect the heel, and an experienced podiatrist can give you a proper diagnosis.

There are many conditions which can cause heel pain, but the most commonly seen condition is plantar fasciitis.

What is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar Fasciitis is a painful condition caused by overuse of the plantar fascia, a band of connective tissue which helps give the foot arch its shape.  The plantar fascia resembles a broad, thick band which extends from under the heel to the ball of the foot.  It is indispensable in foot function.

Most often, Plantar Fasciitis happens when the plantar fascia is overloaded, for example due to flat feet.  Micro-tears occur in the plantar fascia.  After some time, this leads to inflammation and then degeneration of the fascia where it attaches to the heel bone (calcaneus).

Signs and Symptoms of plantar fasciitis include:

  • Pain in the heel, often along the inner rim.
  • Pain is usually worse in the morning when getting out of bed, or when standing after sitting for long periods of time.
  • Pain is usually worse after a prolonged period of standing or walking.
  • Pain when pressing the bottom of the heel.
  • Sometimes swelling may be present.

What are some causes of Plantar Fasciitis?

  • Flat Feet” or feet which pronate (or roll in)
  • Obesity
  • High arches with taut fascial band
  • Tight calf muscles
  • Increase in exercises or activity
  • Incorrect footwear
